Texas doctor reveals how eating a “missing” protein before bed may help STOP bone loss while you sleep

The study, published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, focused on 11,084 postmenopausal women. 


The women who slept five hours or less per night had significantly lower bone mineral density at four sites — whole body, hip, neck and spine — compared to women who slept seven hours a night.

  • Women who slept five hours or less a night had a 22 percent higher risk of having low bone mineral density.
  • And a 63 percent higher risk of having osteoporosis of the hip compared with the women who slept seven hours a night.
  • The women who slept less than five hours a night had a 28 percent higher risk of osteoporosis of the spine, and a 94 percent increased risk of osteoporosis of the whole body compared with those who slept seven hours per night.

Why sleep is so important for bone health

The body undergoes many healing and recovery processes during sleep, including bone remodeling, during which old tissue is removed and new bone tissue is formed. 


Therefore if you are sleeping less, one explanation for accelerated bone loss is that bone remodeling isn’t happening properly – which can increase bone loss and fracture risks.


In fact, a follow up study found that women who had short sleep were more likely to sustain a fracture*.
